Managing Reluctant Learners in the Classroom

Practical strategies for teachers working with Level 1 and Level 2 students

Reasons for attending this programme:
Why do I have to do this? This is stupid. I have to be here. What’s the point? Can we go now? Do you hear these all too often? Are you tired of low level disruption?
This course provides practical strategies to inspire and transform your students from the unwilling to the engaged, from sullen to smiling!

What is this training about?
Despite many government initiatives to engage with young people turned off by teaching and learning, colleges still find themselves challenged by the 3Ds. Much research has been done into the causes of disaffection but understanding why does not necessarily give you the tools of how to respond positively.
This practical course will provide strategies, behaviours and systems to bring young people back on board. Drawing on a broad base of action research, practical applications and advanced communication techniques it provides you with a toolkit of opportunities to prevent, intervene, and engage your students.

During this programme you learn:

  • The factors which create unhelpful beliefs for our students
  • The reasons that underpin poor behaviour
  • What students need from their teachers to be successful
  • The process of changing beliefs and attitudes in students
  • To use your language in powerful ways to gain commitment
  • How to set up a lesson and presuppose success and engagement
  • To establish for the student’s ‘what’s in it for them’
  • To create an atmosphere of co-operation and empowerment using boundaries, guidelines and consequences that really work
  • To make early interventions to prevent disruption
  • Create an action plan for change during the next 4 weeks

  • This course has been worth every penny. Fast doesn’t mean lacking in quality. The sheer tonnage of information is astonishing. It’s so worth it. You will learn a lot even if you are a very experienced teacher and you will enjoy it
    Dr Sharon Ney

  • It doesn’t matter how experience you are, go for it. The training was the most magic. Teaching must go over to learning and we in school have to take responsibility for that. I will use this in my work as a consultant helping schools to improve. Many many thanks for a great course.
    Anita Svennson,Swedish Educational consultant

  • I may wobble but I move forward with a giggle into all that is possible. The course has accelerated my own slow and steady learning into the amazing and continued possibility of learning
    Vicky Morgan,College lecturer

  • This was loads of fun and I loved it. Fun and interactive ways of learning and how to apply that to teaching. Some may think that its only for teachers but we are all teachers in different areas. This course totally surpassed my expectations and all my goals were achieved. Creative teaching makes you want to teach. I highly recommend it so that more good teachers equal more confident kids. Just do it!
